WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is typically diagnosed within the first three years of a child’s life. It is generally characterized by deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. Children diagnosed with ASD may also exhibit varying levels of intellectual disability, accompanied by developmental delays in language, motor, and communication skills. ASD was declared a disability in the US in 1990.

Symptoms in children with ASD exist on a wide variety of spectrum and can range from mild to severe.  It is defined as a developmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, as well repetitive behaviors and restricted interests.
